3-D movies refer to movies that feature the illusion of depth. This technology actually began in the 1890s. In recent times, we see its reincarnation in IMAX theaters and the movies these feature. 3-D movies present an unconquered realm in film-making, posing new challenges and greater expectations.
What's so special about 3-D movies
Because of the illusion of depth, 3-D movies are able to emphasize on certain elements of filmmaking. Apart from the dialogue and plot, 3-D movies come out as more visceral, more real. The viewer feels like he/she is part of the action.
Popular 3-D movies
In recent times, with the resurgence of 3-D movies through IMAX technology, some movies have stood out. This includes Ghost of the Abyss, credited as the first full-length 3-D IMAX film, by James Cameron. Other popular modern 3-D movies include The Polar Express, A Christmas Carol, The Dark Knight, and Deep Sea.
3-D movies' appeal to the audience
The appeal of 3-D movies to the audience is certainly different. For one thing, viewers need to use specialized glasses for this. This alone can be a lot of fun. Plus, when watching 3-D movies, viewers feel like they’re part of the action. Thus, everything becomes more exciting and fulfilling.

I had never missed to watch the MTV Movie awards for I considered it the wackiest award-giving body in Hollywood. This year, the hilarious comedy "Wedding Crashers" bagged the top awards. This film took home three golden popcorn awards which included Best Film, Best Breakthrough Performance, and its leading actors, Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson, were voted by the fans as the Best Movie Duo.
Another thing that I like about this funny and crazy award giving-body are its infamous honoring categories like the Best Silver Screen Kiss. For this category, fans voted to win the passionate and quite eye-popping kiss of Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal in the movie Brokeback Mountain. It's good to know that artists still attend this crazy party and deliver speeches, showing that they really appreciate the votes made for them.
Of course, I also enjoyed the musical performances of different pop artists like Gnarls Barkley, Christina Aguilera, and AFI. MTV really rocks because it is not as formal and stiff like the Oscars or the Golden Globe, and the teenagers of America vote who are going to win. Totally cool and funny, this group certainly suits the entertainment taste of the modern generation.

No, Geri Haliwell didn't go gothic and dissed out that sexy image she had after the Spice Girls break-up, nor the much-awaited sequel to that popular song of hers about rain and men, if you know what I mean. I'm here to talk about this equally sexy and extremely suspenseful movie, Bloodrayne, which is probably out on DVD, and along with the DVD package comes the Bloodrayne 2 PC game bundled with it! Imagine the deal you're getting here!
Now Bloodrayne - just like Tomb Raider, this movie first went out in the market as a PC role playing game. It's about Nazi Germany doing horrific experiments on the people in their concentration camps (the movie kept in line with the truth, don't you think?). This movie stars Terminator 3's Kristanna Loken, Ben Kingsley, Michelle Rodriguez and Michael Madsen.
The DVD package includes the Bloodrayne 2 PC game, a Director's Cut version of the film, and an unrated uncut version of it. I enjoyed playing the original Bloodrayne game, along with its excellent soundtrack, so I think you PC gamers out there would enjoy this DVD package deal as much as the movie enthusiasts out there. The Bloodrayne movie may not have done well in the box office, but the Bloodrayne DVD package promises an even larger share of the profits from both gamers and movie lovers.

As a civilian and a citizen, I am very interested on the United States' politics and policies. I also want to always be updated on the current affairs of the world and I even want a regular update on the daily weather forecast. When I heard of the film "The Interpreter", I was very much interested on its content and storyboard.
I am very glad that there are still a few good entertainment films that pertain to political and worldly issues. The Interpreter stars Nicole Kidman and Sean Penn. For the first time in my movie-watching life, I did not watch a film because Nicole Kidman was in it. I watched The Interpreter because it had really impacted on me, regarding the issue that it tackles.
The Interpreter film is about this United Nations interpreter, played by Nicole Kidman, who stumbled upon a colloquy in the Ku language. The Ku language is the dialect of the Matobo tribe where Nicole Kidman's character originated from. This is really a mind-twisting movie. Plus, it was the first movie to be shot inside one of the most important edifices in the United States. So, this is a movie that you shouldn't dare miss.

Brokeback Mountain is creating loud Oscar buzz this year. And why not? This movie was directed by Ang Lee, who we all know directed the award-winning movie, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, years ago. The script was based on Annie Proulx's Pulitzer Prize winning short story. The screenplay was adapted by equally great authors, Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana.
Three actors in this movie are vying for the Academy Awards. Heath Ledger for Best Actor, Jake Gyllenhaal and Michelle Williams for Best Supporting Actor and Actress, respectively. Brokeback Mountain has nominations for almost all the categories in the Academy Awards.
This movie is about two cowboys in love, and that love prevailing for years. Even though they have established their own families and lead a seemingly normal life, Ennis Del Mar (Ledger) and Jack Twist (Gyllenhaal) secretly meet to be with each other. Set in the parts of Wyoming and Texas, these two gay cowboys struggle to keep their relationship alive. The movie ends in a heartbreaking point that will surely make moviegoers cry.
All the aspects of the movie are nothing short of award-winning. It will be no surprise if this movie bags most of the gold Oscars.
There are also reports that Heath almost broke Jake's nose on a kissing scene.
Intrigued? Watch it.

Based on the adjusted earning of all American Films, Gone with the Wind registered the highest income. Although the unadjusted earnings say that Titanic is number one, computing the ticket sales with inflation points that the later is still rules above the rest. Gone with the Wind is a classic love story and the barometer of every movies that are being shown today. The film was awarded with several trophies and distinctions.
In the list of top grossing films, most were shown before the new millennium. This may be an indication that the film industry is in a slump considering the huge flops that a lot of films had. Even the special effects and high-tech gadgets were not able to catapult the films into the top ticket sellers of all time. As the classics make their marks, the new movies try to establish their own billing. The task is hard, but nothing can really defeat the films that made a legacy.

There have been numerous negative reactions to some Asian-produced films like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and The Touch (both Michelle Yeoh starrers). With the ill-deserved negative reviews such films have been getting, it's finally refreshing to see that a lot of movie critics enjoyed Stephen Chow's film Kung Fu Hustle.
Many of the people who went to see Kung Fu Hustle were left teary-eyed and dumbstruck because of the many funny sequences and because of the pointlessness of the movie.
The story basically is about a man who dreams of becoming a Kung Fu Master someday but does many mistakes like pretending to be part of the notorious Axe Gang that has been terrorizing Shanghai, China.
At first you would still try to concentrate on the story and on the movie's dreamy atmosphere, but then you'll realize that it's futile to keep yourself interested in the storyline when you can't help but laugh at almost everything that happens in the movie.
There are people though who did not enjoy all the flying and other special effects in the film. They ought to know that these are all part of the fantasy-like atmosphere that the movie is trying to achieve.

From the director that gave the world the surreal drug movie Trainspotting comes a terrifying vision of science gone horribly wrong. Director Danny Boyle directs this nightmarish movie about a virus that turns whoever is infected by it into a mad, crazed, rage filled maniac who can't wait but rip apart those who are not infected, and the struggle of a group of the uninfected to escape this hell.
Genuinely frightening and shocking, 28 Days Later has been called a modern zombie movie, but unlike their undead Italian counterparts, these monsters move. Very fast.
If you like to be scared and love being disturbed (not me, I'm disturbed enough already), then pop in 28 Days Later, and be prepared to be kept awake all night.

Life Is Beautiful by Roberto Benigni is one of the most unforgettable movies ever to grace the big screen. The film is a beautiful blend of the love story of Guido and Dora, their family's ordeals during an anti-semitic period, and the effects of the Nazi invasion in Italy.
At the beginning, the movie appears to be a mixture of light hearted comedy and drama. Yet at the end of it, viewers realize that it uses the same simple and common storyline in order to emphasize the most important values in life - family, love, hope, and humor.
It is remarkable and at the same time touching to see how Guido saved his son from the horrors of war by making him believe that everything around them was just a game. In the end, Guido sacrificed his own life in order to save and reunite the lives of his loved ones.
Life Is Beautiful teaches us how love, hope, and good humor can change one's perspective towards life and often for the better.

With all the buzz being generated by the upcoming remake to the classic King Kong, it seems only right to finally release the original on DVD in all its glory, and then some. The 1933 version has been digitally remastered, and cleaned up, with details now as crisp and clear as if they were just made a few years ago.
Chock-full of special features, like cast and crew interviews, commentary and making-of featurettes, the King Kong Collector's Edition DVD also has one feature that will have fans talking about for years: The infamous "Spider Sequence," where the big ape shakes some sailors off a log and sends them plummeting into a chasm full of ravenous spiders, has been restored, done by none other than Peter Jackson, the director of the upcoming remake!
It's nice to know, even after all these years that a classic such as King Kong can still hold its own.

If you're the type of fan who wants some action, suspense and intrigue in their movie, then it would do you good to watch the Robert DeNiro starrer Ronin. In this spy thriller, DeNiro joins an international cast of miscreants (including Jean Reno, Jonathan Pryce and Sean Bean) all out to grab a mysterious suitcase.
With scene after scene of action, mystery and intrigue, Ronin will make your jaw drop with its beautiful European settings, and its famous car chase scenes will have you hanging on the edge of your seat.
While not the most realistic of movies (what the heck was in the suitcase, anyway?) Ronin delivers on the action and is a good way to spend an afternoon lounging in front of the TV.

This movie is a notable one for three reasons: First, it's a smart action film, cleverly mixing comedy, tragedy and gunplay, second, it introduced viewers to Jean Reno, an incredible actor and French film star, and lastly, it marked the beautiful Natalie Portman's on-screen debut.
Leon (also known as Leon, the Professional, or The Professional) is the story of an assassin (Reno) whose deadly skill in the art of killing is offset by a terrible weakness: He is illiterate. But he is content to live his empty life until one day, crooked cops kill his neighbor and it falls to him to take care of his neighbor's young daughter Mathilde (Portman). Mathilde and Leon end up depending on each other, and eventually care for each other deeply. Leon winds up teaching Mathilde the tricks of his trade at Mathilde's request. When the cops come back to finish off Mathilde, all hell breaks loose.
An engaging, adrenaline-pumping film, Leon wisely doesn't lose track of its human side, and it is this mix of brutality and humanity that makes this film stand out from other action movies.

Absurd, surreal and hilarious are but some of the words used to describe this 1984 comedy written and directed by the makers of another absurd and surreal comedy, Airplane!, Jim Abrahams and David Zucker. This time, they parody the spy thrillers and war dramas of the WW2 era.
Top Secret! was Val Kilmer's first starring role, and his capability as an actor, with his deadpan delivery and capacity for physical comedy are showcased here. Chock full of pop-culture references, inside jokes and offbeat humor, Top Secret! is a comedy classic that can still hold is own even today, even if most of the pop-culture references might be lost on today's short attention span generation.

Leave it to those wacky Germans to come up with some innovative ideas. Germany has been a breeding ground for many ideas, some good (Volkswagens, Mercedes-Benz, Oktoberfest, etc.), some bad (The Berlin Wall, etc.).
I would like to believe that this innovation is one of their better ideas. The Automaten Videothek or Video Automat is a one-stop rental shop that gives the harried consumer a chance to catch up on all the latest films they missed in the theatre, or were too busy to rent in the store.
Resembling a vending machine, the Video Automat lets you choose from a library of films, and for a small fee, you can now borrow the film of your choice without fear of ridicule or shame. Hopefully, this innovation will soon make its way to the Americas.

Do you love watching movies, but can't stomach the latest Hollywood offerings? Are you tired of the formulaic films that studios churn out and force down our throats? Do you wish, just once, to watch something different?
Then why not take a chance and watch an independent film festival? Just use the web and I'm sure you'll find something on the independent movie scene to spark your interest. Film festivals are an excellent way for the critic in you, and the film lover in all of us, to indulge his favorite pastime.
Film festivals give the aspiring movie maker a chance to express their views and showcase their talents. Never mind the limited budgets, shoddy production values or less-than-stellar acting. At least you're watching something different.

This 1978 film was a big risk for director John Carpenter. Shot on a shoestring budget, saddled with an ugly initial name (the Babysitter Murders) and no major studio backing, Halloween defied the odds and became one of the most successful horror movies ever made.
The now-classic and often aped formula of an unfeeling, indestructible killer was started by this movie, a few years before another masked maniac took the cliché and ran with it. Michael Myers was the original boogeyman of the cinema, unstoppable and unreasonable, killing people left and right with no rhyme or reason. It was this unpredictable nature and the novel ways the killer dispatched of his victims that made Halloween so terrifying back then.
A horror/slasher classic through and through, Halloween is a must for those late nights when you want a good scare.

A Bridge too Far is considered one of the greatest war films of all time, and there has never been an ensemble cast that has matched the combined star power this film assembled. James Caan, Sean Connery, Michael Caine, Anthony Hopkins and a cast of many other well known actors star in this harrowing retelling of the massive miscalculation that was Operation Market Garden in World War 2.
Director Sir Richard Attenborough succeeds in bringing to light the valor and futility of war by focusing not only on just one character, but on a diverse cast of soldiers, generals and civilians that tells of the horrors and glory of war.
A Bridge Too Far is a riveting war epic that should not be missed, if only to educate the later generations on the lessons learned from WWII.

This Sci-Fi classic (it remains to be seen if the Spielberg version will become one) is one of the most recognized movies of all time, from the trademark sound of the Martian death ray to the unique design of the Alien war machines. Although it may be prone to some hokey dialogue and silly gender roles at times, it is nonetheless a solid science fiction thriller that still holds it own to this day.
Come November 1, 2005, Paramount Home Video will release a special collector's edition DVD of this classic film, with remastered visuals and audio, and some extras like actor commentary and "making of" featurettes. Add that to an excellent film and you've got a gem in you hands. Don't let this one slip out of your hands, sci-fi fans!

Make no mistake, the story of the underdog is a classic in literature, and has become a staple in the movie business. It is this mystique with the loser done good that makes Sylvester Stallone's classic film Rocky so endearing and beloved by fans of films and boxing everywhere.
While the first, second and third films were seen as excellent films, the lackluster sequels that followed seemed to seal the deal regarding any future Rocky movies. Fans were disappointed with the films that followed, and coupled with Stallone’s then-waning popularity, made even the most enthusiastic Rocky fan call or the towel to be thrown in.
But now after 15 years in retirement, Rocky seems to be ready to tape up his fists again. Sony Studios, MGM and Revolution Studios announced that they were making plans on making a sixth Rocky film with Sylvester Stallone in which the actor will write and star in. Looks like the fight's not over yet, folks.

This can be considered the movie that started that 80's movie craze about "post-Apocalyptic" world where man is reduced to barbaric squabbling over some precious material (in this case, gasoline, but it has been about water, air and unfortunately women as well) in order to survive.
Starring a then-rising star known as Mel Gibson, The Road Warrior painted a bleak, desperate landscape of the future where warring gangs terrorize those with the resources and the fight for survival takes centerstage.
It has been often hailed as a masterpiece of action film making, with the last 20 minutes being the highlight of the movie. The Road Warrior is a must for any serious action fan.

Action movies differ in the orient and in Hollywood. Budgets, of course, have a lot to say about that, but so do creativity and ingenuity. And in the bigger picture, it is Hong Kong, the orient's answer to Hollywood, that holds all the aces.
After all, Hong Kong gave us two of the world's most beloved action stars, who are still respected even decades after their primes. Bruce Lee, perhaps the most influential martial artist ever, and action-comedy king Jacky Chan are but two of Hong Kong's stars, but are most noted in making the whole world notice the Hong Kong cinema industry. Hong Kong action movies are considered by many to be classics in violence and artistry.
By contrast, Hollywood action stars tend to become laughable shells of their former selves, unable to adapt to newer demands of film making.

This 1986 fantasy film is a triumph of puppetry and practical special effects. Starring a young Jennifer Connelly and the immortal David Bowie, Labyrinth showcases the talents of the great Jim Henson, the man who gave the world the Muppets and a plethora of other creatures until his untimely death in 1990.
Labyrinth tells the fantastic story of Sarah (Jennifer Connelly) who, after foolishly wishing her baby brother to become the Goblin King's (David Bowie) slave, is on a quest to save her sibling from a terrible fate as one of the Goblin King's many goblin servants. Along the way she encounters an unforgettable cast of characters, all created by the genius of master puppeteer Jim Henson.
It is seen by many as a coming of age story for the heroine, Sarah, as she learns about maturity and responsibility. But many more people see this film as a fantastic movie with great characters and a good story.

This drama, which stars Jeff Daniels, Laura Linney and Anna Paquin tells the story of an eccentric family patriarch (Daniels) who claimed to be a successful writer, but settled down to his teaching job, coming to odds with his wife (Linney) when she exhibits some writing talent. Jealousy soon divides the family, with their children taking different approaches in relating to their parents.
This movie is based on director Noel Baumbach's (Kicking and Screaming, 1995) own experiences with his parent's divorce. The movie attempts to paint an honest, bittersweet look at the trials of undergoing a divorce, and its effect on children.

It is the movie that arguably rocketed Arnold Schwarzenegger to movie superstardom It is the movie that introduced one of the most menacing pop icons ever seen. It is a movie that revamped the science-fiction action movie.
The movie is James Cameron's The Terminator.
Released in 1984, this movie is a landmark in many ways. It catapulted the director, the stars and the character of the Terminator into the public eye. The movie would spawn two sequels, many comic books, numerous video games and even a theme park ride.
The Terminator is a true classic. If it isn't it should damn well be called one.
